Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Hand-Tufted Carpet; A Great Achievement for the Carpet Industry, but a Missed Opportunity for Iran
In September 2025, Hands Carpets, a subsidiary of Patodia Contract Group (India), achieved a Guinness World Record for producing the World’s Largest Hand-Tufted Carpet.
This monumental project was commissioned for the Astana Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in Central Asia by area, located in Kazakhstan’s capital.
Project Highlights
The gigantic hand-tufted carpet covers an area of over 12,460 square meters and features a central medallion 70 meters in diameter.
Its design is inspired by the Gardens of Paradise, with a symmetrical radial layout that enhances the grandeur of the mosque’s interior.
Over 1,000 skilled Indian artisans participated in the project.
The carpet was produced in 125 separate panels (each measuring 5×25 meters) and was fully installed on-site within 50 working days, forming a seamless wall-to-wall carpet.
From an engineering perspective, the project posed a major challenge — even the slightest miscalculation could have disrupted the overall pattern alignment. Therefore, design, technical, and production teams collaborated through a unified Integrated Production process to ensure flawless precision and quality.
Hand-Tufted Carpet Technique – How It Differs from Traditional Hand-Knotted Rugs
Hand-Tufted Carpets are produced using a Tufting Gun (air-powered or electric), which inserts yarn directly into a backing fabric. The pile is then secured with latex adhesive, and a secondary fabric backing is applied for reinforcement.
In contrast, traditional Persian, Turkish, or Afghan carpets are hand-knotted with warp and weft threads.
The hand-tufted method is preferred for large-scale projects, such as mosques, hotels, and luxury spaces, because it offers faster production and allows for custom, oversized, wall-to-wall designs.
About the Astana Grand Mosque

The Astana Grand Mosque is one of Kazakhstan’s most iconic and modern religious landmarks, with a capacity for 235,000 worshippers.
It was designed by Dewan Architects & Engineers (Dubai) and constructed by Sembol Construction (Turkey).
The mosque’s main dome, measuring 62 meters in diameter and 83 meters in height, is among the largest domes in the world, decorated with marble, stained glass, and gold detailing.
Project Value and Company Background
The contract value for the carpet was approximately 12 crore Indian rupees (USD 1.5 million).
With a legacy of over 140 years, Patodia Contract is one of Asia’s most reputable carpet manufacturers, producing more than 25,000 square meters per month and supplying carpets to palaces, luxury hotels, and sacred spaces worldwide.
A Missed Opportunity for Iran
Given Iran’s unparalleled heritage in crafting large-scale and custom wall-to-wall carpets, this project could have been an ideal opportunity for Iranian artisans.
However, due to economic sanctions, banking restrictions, and export limitations, the client opted to collaborate with the Indian manufacturer instead.
Still, there is hope that Iranian carpet artists will soon have the opportunity to participate in major international projects, allowing Persian carpet artistry to reclaim its global recognition and reflect the deep cultural soul of Iran.
